What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is one of the most used metals in the world. Therefore, let’s see exactly what it is and what elements it is composed of.
Stainless steel is a family of steels, an alloy of iron (Fe) and carbon (C), the latter in proportions equal to or less than 2 percent. At least 10.5% chromium (Cr) is added to it, which causes the formation of a protective layer of chromium oxide that covers the surface of the steel and makes it stainless and, at the same time, highly durable. According to European standard EN 10088-12, a steel is classified as stainless if it contains at least 10.5% chromium by mass and less than 1.2% carbon.
It should be noted that this mixture can also be supplemented with other elements that provide other valuable characteristics such as nickel (makes it more weldable, malleable and ductile, increases its hardness and toughness) or molybdenum (makes it more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion).
Types of stainless steel
There are different types of stainless steel, depending on their composition and quality:
- Martensitic stainless steel: it is made only with carbon (greater than or equal to 0.10%) and chrono (from 12 to 14%). It is used to produce simple objects such as cutlery, screws, dental instruments, among others.
- Ferritic stainless steel: It has at least 0.12% carbon and 16% chromium. It has good corrosion resistance and low hardness. It is used in the food industry and household.
- Austenitic stainless steel: Its alloying elements are iron, chromium (16 to 26%), nickel and a low carbon content. It has superior corrosion resistance, and very good weldability and formability. This type of steel is used, among others, in the chemical, pharmaceutical, petroleum, food, aeronautical and naval sectors.
- Duplex stainless steel: This is an alloy of iron, chromium (at levels between 18 and 38%) and nickel (between 4.5 and 8%). It is used in the construction of large works, footbridges and bridges, as it has the best corrosion resistance and mechanical performance characteristics.
Stainless steel advantages in durability and cleanability
Due to its ability to withstand the physical and chemical conditions to which it is exposed, stainless steel is a very durable material compared to other types of steel. While steel in some cases already starts to deteriorate after 15 years, stainless steel can exceed 60 years.
On the other hand, in terms of cleaning, due to its composition and low roughness, external agents such as dust and bacteria do not adhere to its surface, so it is easy to treat with traditional cleaning products. In the case of sanitary ware, a soft cloth or sponge with water or neutral detergent can be used to remove stains. If the stains resist, alcohol or acetone can also be used, or alkaline solutions such as baking soda. In any case, it is important that the cleaning is finished with water and drying the product.

- Toughness: Stainless steel is very resistant to impact. Under impact conditions, it can absorb a large amount of energy before breaking.
- Sustainability: All stainless steels are recyclable and highly cost-effective because of their amounts of chromium and nickel. Generally, modern stainless steels are manufactured with 60% recycled material.
